With the sports world on pause, NFL Free Agency is pretty much all we have to talk about, so let’s get it cracking. Players are getting signed left and right, so I will be focusing on the Tight End position and giving my take on how each signing so far will impact the 2020 NFL fantasy football season.
Austin Hooper – signed with Cleveland Browns
As if the Cleveland Browns needed more offensive weapons. He provides Baker Mayfield with a more reliable option than David Njoku, who looks to be on the outs. Hooper has averaged 92/73/723/5 stats line over the last two years, and I expect that to continue. He will remain a top 7 Fantasy option at the TE position.
Jimmy Graham – signed with Chicago Bears
I can’t imagine a worse situation for Jimmy Graham to have gone. He has become a shell of himself athletically, and going from Aaron Rodgers to Mitch Trubisky will not help at all. The Bears currently have 10 TEs on their roster, including Graham, and none of them are worth drafting in your fantasy leagues come this August.
Hayden Hurst – signed with Atlanta Falcons
This is the most intriguing signing for me, fantasy-wise. He goes from being a back-up TE option in a run heavy Ravens offense to being the projected starter for the pass heavy Falcons offense. Austin Hooper was able to produce alongside Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley, so competition will not negatively affect Hurst. I am a big fan of waiting on the TE position in fantasy drafts, so I anticipate having a decent amount of Hurst shares, especially in best ball leagues. He is the early front runner to be the 2020 version of Darren Waller.
Greg Olsen – signed with Seattle Seahawks
This was one of the early TE signings and it was much more intriguing, relatively speaking, before the Seahawks resigned Will Dissly. Dissly is coming off a pretty significant knee injury, so until he is healthy, Greg Olsen will have the job to himself. In terms of fantasy, Olsen is no more than a weekly fill in, and should no be on anyone’s draft radar.
Jason Witten – signed to Oakland Raiders
Not much to say here. The only thing this does is hurt the value of Darren Waller, which isn’t good for anyone. Here’s to hoping he is a weekly inactive come Week 1.
